December 2024
With all the different celebrations that occur this month, I will list some below but mainly focus on Christmas.
I enjoy Christmas. The smells of cinnamon and pine. The lights and smiles from others. A day to decorate the tree. But what are some of the often not talked about history of Christmas. Continuing reading to find out.
Christmas
Before the birth of Jesus and Pope Julius I designating Christmas Day on December 25th the end of December was a two weeks to a month long celebration. Winter Solstice, Yule, and Saturnalia are often compared to the celebration we have today with Mardi Gras.
Winter Solstice embraced the end of shorter days and beginning of more sunlight. Instead of being a one day event it carried on into January.
The Nordic tradition of Yule, celebrated by burning a huge log that often burnt for weeks. The embers that floated off the log were a sign of how many cattle or sheep births that would occur in the coming year.
Saturnalia was a Roman celebration that lasted for a month. Everyone including enslaved people were able to celebrate in the festivities. This was the one time of the year everyone was equal and the poor held power. Often the poor would knock on wealthy citizens doors asking for food and gifts. If the wealthy citizen refused they would be shamed. The wealthy looked at this time as a way to pay back their debt to society.
During the 1600s in England and in Boston Christmas was banned. Anyone caught celebrating would be fined. It wasn’t until the late 1800s that Christmas became a federal holiday.
These celebrations occurred towards the end of December and carried into January. This is part of why the Pope designated December 25th the day Jesus was born to prevent the continuation of these celebrations.
